  • Mars Spirit Rover "Digs" Hot Soup!

    It's true!

    NASA's 2/20/04 press release reads:

       "Sol 47, Feb 20, 2004: Spirit Digs a Trench

"On sol 47, ending at 12:36 p.m. February 20, 2004 PST, engineers woke Spirit up to the song "Dig Down Deep," by Hot Soup [written by Libby Roderick], and that's exactly what Spirit proceeded to do. The two-hour operation performed by Spirit's left front wheel resulted in a trench 7-8 centimeters deep (2.8 to 3.1 inches) that uncovers fresh soil and possibly ancient information...."

We're thrilled to have connected with Mark Adler, Mars Exploration Rover Spirit Mission Manager -- the guy who picks the songs that get played to start and end each Mars day. He picked the Hot Soup recording of "Dig Down Deep" to start the Spirit digging its historic first trench. Mark found us on iTunes (we're still not sure how we got there).

    Here's Mark's note to us:

"I'm the one who picked "Dig Down Deep" to play for Spirit's 47th day on Mars. I was not a fan of Hot Soup before that, but I am now! I stumbled across it while searching on the iTunes Music Store for something to play. I listened to the snippet, and instantly knew that I had found my song for the day.

The voices, harmony, and rhythm were simply captivating with this soul-penetrating crystalline clarity, and the lyrics were so appropriate, it was freaky. We were going to do our first digging operation with the Spirit rover (making a trench with the wheels) to look under the surface for possible evidence of liquid water having been there at one time. We had to dig to try to answer the question. "There's clear water running through me", "ain't got no answers, got a whole lotta questions", "nothing on the surface seems to satisfy me". The lyrics were right on.

"So you know, the purpose of the Mars Exploration Rovers, their reason for existence, is to determine whether Mars may have once had an environment suitable for life. The key ingredient is water. In particular, liquid water with the appropriate mix of organic chemicals and energy. Essentially, we're looking for hot soup.

"Sue, Christina, and Jennifer: thank you for such a sublime song!"

HOW ABOUT THAT??!!! Can you imagine how thrilled we are???

BTW, we've recommended George Wurzbach's song "We're Martians" to Mark, in case they do find "soup" on the red planet.
